Compiled for traditional Catholic scholarly purposes. All passages are drawn from Migne’s Patrologia Graeca (PG), Vols. 101–104, with facing Latin in the critical edition. Greek text given first; English translation follows. Source references indicate PG volume and approximate column location.


I. Deicide: The Jews as “God-Killers” and “Lord-Killers”

1. “The God-Killing Jews” (θεοκτόνοις Ἰουδαίοις)

Greek (PG 104): παρεοίκασιν Ἰούδᾳ τῷ προδότῃ, ὃς τοῖς θεοκτόνοις Ἰουδαίοις τιμῆς ἀργυρίου τὸν Χριστὸν ἀπεμπολήσατο.

Translation: “They resemble Judas the traitor, who sold Christ to the God-killing Jews for a price of silver.”

2. “The Lord-Killing Jews” (κυριοκτόνοις Ἰουδαίοις)

Greek (PG 104): εἰς σημεῖον ἀντιλεγόμενον τοῖς κυριοκτόνοις Ἰουδαίοις τοῖς λέγουσιν· εἰ Υἱὸς εἶ τοῦ Θεοῦ, κατάβηθι ἀπὸ τοῦ σταυροῦ, καὶ πιστεύομέν σοι.

Translation: “…set as a sign of contradiction against the Lord-killing Jews, who say: ‘If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross, and we will believe you.'”

II. The Crucifixion: Jewish Guilt, the Cross, and Bloodguilt

3. The Prophet-Killing Tongue, Voice, and Hands

Greek (PG 101): τέθνηκεν ὁ τὸ κράτος μὲν τῆς ἐξουσίας ἁρπάσαι κατηγορούμενος, μέχρι δὲ καὶ αὐτῆς προφάσεως ἄθῶος ὀφθεὶς παντὸς ἀδικήματος· ὃν προφητοκτόνος γλῶσσα καὶ φωνὴ καὶ χεῖρες, σοῦ δοκοῦντος φέρειν φιλανθρωποτέραν ψῆφον, ὑπὸ κρίσιν ἤγαγον θανάτου.

Translation: “He is dead — he who was accused of usurping royal authority, yet was seen to be innocent of every crime down to the very pretext — he whom the prophet-killing tongue and voice and hands brought under sentence of death, while you [Pilate] were thought to be pronouncing the more merciful verdict.”

4. The Jewish Bloodguilt Triumphant on the Cross; Their Murderous Hatred Even in Death

Greek (PG 101): οὐδὲ γὰρ οὐδ᾽ ὁ τῶν Ἰουδαίων ὄχλος ἀνιάσεται γῇ μαθόντες τὸν ἐχθρὸν καλυπτόμενον. Μᾶλλον μὲν οὖν δυσχεραίνουσι καὶ νεκρὸν τὸν ὑπ᾿ αὐτῶν μισούμενον βλέποντες· τοῦτο μὲν τὴν αὐτῶν μιαιφονίαν τῷ σταυρῷ θριαμβεύοντα, τοῦτο δὲ τῶν ὁρώντων τὸν ἔλεον ἕλκοντα.

Translation: “Not even the crowd of the Jews will be grieved to learn that their enemy has been laid in the earth. Rather, they are vexed even at seeing dead the one they hated — seeing, on the one hand, their own murderous guilt paraded in triumph on the cross, and on the other hand, the pity of the onlookers being drawn forth.”

5. The Nation of Christ-Killers (χριστοκτονία) and the Cross

Greek (PG 101): εἰ τρόπαιον ὁ σταυρὸς, τίς ὁ στήσας τὸ τρόπαιον; εἰ μὲν ὁ νικήσας, τί μάτην τὸ Ἰουδαίων ἔθνος εἰς χριστοκτονίαν διαβάλλεται; εἰ δ᾽ αὐτοὶ τοῦτον ἐπήξαντο — οὐδὲ γὰρ ἀμφισβητήσιμον τοῦτο — πῶς ὁ Χριστὸς κατὰ τοῦ διαβόλου τρόπαιον στῆσαι λέγεται;

Translation: “If the cross is a trophy, who is it that erected the trophy? If it was the victor [Christ], why is the Jewish nation vainly accused of Christ-killing? But if they themselves erected it — and this is beyond dispute — how is it that Christ is said to have set up the trophy against the devil?”

6. The Guilt (ἄγος) of the Jews and the Cross

Greek (PG 101): ἐπήξατο μὲν γὰρ αὐτὸν τὸ θεομάχον ἔθνος, οὐχ ὡς τρόπαιον δὲ κατὰ τοῦ ἐχθροῦ, ἀλλ᾽ ὡς τοῦ κοινοῦ Σωτῆρος κολαστήριον· ὁ δὲ τὴν ἐκείνων κακουργίαν εἰς τὴν κατὰ τοῦ ἐχθροῦ νίκην ἀντιστρέψας, οἷα δὴ τροπαίῳ τῷ σταυρῷ προσεχρήσατο· οὔτε γοῦν τὸ τῶν Ἰουδαίων ἄγος τὸ τρόπαιον ἔστησεν, οὐ μὴν ἀλλ᾽ οὐδ᾽ ὁ Σωτήρ τοῦ γένους ἑαυτῷ τὸν σταυρὸν συνεπήξατο, ἀλλ᾽ ἐκείνων ἐπὶ κολάσει τοῦ Δεσπότου πηξαμένων, αὐτὸς ἐπὶ σωτηρίᾳ τῆς ἡμετέρας φύσεως εἰς τρόπαιον μετετάξατο.

Translation: “For the God-fighting nation erected it [the cross] not as a trophy against the enemy, but as an instrument of punishment for the common Savior. He, however, having turned their wickedness into a victory over the enemy, used the cross as a trophy. Therefore neither did the guilt (ἄγος) of the Jews erect the trophy, nor did the Savior of the race erect the cross for Himself — but when they erected it for the punishment of the Master, He converted it into a trophy for the salvation of our nature.”

7. The Plot of the Murderous Jews (μιαιφόνοι) Against the Savior

Translation: “The plot of the murderous Jews was ratified through deliberation and premeditation.”

8. The Christ-Hating Jewish Nation Condemning the Savior to the Cross

Greek (PG 101): τὸ μισόχριστον τῶν Ἰουδαίων γένος εὐεργετοῦντα, καὶ θεραπεύοντα νόσους ἀνιάτους τὸν Σωτῆρα ἀντὶ τοῦ δοξολογεῖν, καὶ στεφάνοις ἀμείβεσθαι χαρίτων, σταυρῷ κατεδίκασε, καὶ ἐπονειδίστῳ θανάτῳ.

Translation: “The Christ-hating race of the Jews, instead of glorifying the Savior who was benefiting them and healing incurable diseases, and instead of repaying Him with crowns of gratitude, condemned Him to the cross and to a shameful death.”

III. The Jews as Children of the Devil

9. The Devil Proclaimed the Father of the Ungrateful Jews

Greek (PG 101): τὸ δὲ περιεσκεμμένον τῷ τρόπῳ τῆς διαστολῆς, ῥυθμιζόμενον καὶ ταῖς προλαβούσαις ἐννοίαις συνδιαιρούμενον, αὐτὸν τε τὸν διάβολον πατέρα τῶν ἀγνωμόνων Ἰουδαίων ἀπαγγέλλει.

Translation: “But the careful interpretation, measured by the principle of punctuation and divided according to the preceding thoughts, proclaims the very devil himself to be the father of the ungrateful Jews.”

10. “It Is Clear from What Has Been Said That the Devil Is Named the Father of the Jews”

Greek (PG 101): Καὶ φανερὸν ἐκ τῶν εἰρημένων ὅτι πατὴρ μὲν τῶν Ἰουδαίων ὁ διάβολος ὀνομάζεται· πατρὸς δὲ τοῦ διαβόλου οὔτε λαβεῖν ἔστι φύσιν, οὔτε κλῆσιν οὐδαμῶς παραδηλουμένην, οὔτε τῷ νοήματι.

Translation: “And it is clear from what has been said that the devil is named the father of the Jews; but as for a father of the devil, there is no such nature to be found, nor is any such designation anywhere indicated, either by meaning or by name.”

11. The Jews Follow the Laws of the Devil

Translation: “What commandments were the Jews zealous about, save those by which the devil was glorified? Seeking glory from others, devouring their neighbors with slanders, corrupting the finest things with envy, plotting murder against the Savior, and preparing His death with tongue and will, putting falsehood before truth, and making deceit, calumny, and greed their way of life.”

12. When the Jew Speaks Falsehood, He Inherits the Patrimony of His Father

Greek (PG 101): Ὅταν ὁ Ἰουδαῖος τὸ ψεῦδος λαλεῖ, ὥσπερ καὶ νῦν πατέρα λέγων ἑαυτοῦ τὸν Θεόν, ἐκ τῶν ἰδίων λαλεῖ· ἴδιος γὰρ κλῆρος τῷ πατρὶ, τοῦ πατρὸς ὁ πλοῦτος· ἐκ τῶν ἰδίων οὖν ὁ Ἰουδαῖος λαλεῖ τὸν πατρῷον ὑπελθὼν κλῆρον· καὶ αὐτὸς γὰρ ψεύστης ἐστὶν ὥσπερ ὁ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ.

Translation: “When the Jew speaks falsehood — as also now, calling God his father — he speaks from his own property; for the inheritance belongs to the father, and the father’s wealth [is falsehood]. Therefore the Jew speaks from his own goods, having entered upon his paternal inheritance; for he too is a liar, just as his father is.

IV. Jewish Spiritual Blindness and Hardening of Heart

13. The Synagogue of the Apostate Jews: Seeing They Did Not See

Greek (PG 101): ταύτην ἄρα καὶ τῶν ἀπειθεστάτων Ἰουδαίων ἡ Συναγωγή «οὔτε βλέποντες ἔβλεπον, καὶ ἀκούοντες οὐκ ἤκουον»· ὡς τῶν τοιούτων παραβολῶν, καὶ ὁμοιώσεων τοῦτο μὲν καθορᾶν, καὶ ἀκούειν παρεχομένων. Εἰ γὰρ καὶ πωρώσει τῆς καρδίας τὸ τῶν Ἰουδαίων πλῆθος, καὶ πρὸς τὸ τῆς εὐσεβείας φῶς ἑκουσίως καταμύοντες· «Οὐκ ἔβλεπον βλέποντες, οὐδὲ ἀκούοντες ἤκουον.»

Translation: “This parable the Synagogue of the most rebellious Jews also [received]: ‘Seeing, they did not see; and hearing, they did not hear’ — for such parables and similitudes offer the occasion both to see and to hear. For even though the multitude of the Jews, with hardening of heart and voluntarily shutting their eyes to the light of piety: ‘Seeing, they did not see; and hearing, they did not hear.’

14. The Hardening and Stubbornness of the Jews Stirring up Murmuring

Greek (PG 102): ἐπεὶ τῶν Ἰουδαίων ἡ πώρωσις καὶ σκληροκαρδία εἰς διαγογγωσμοὺς ἐξεῤῥιπίζετο, οὐκ ἄλλαχόθεν αὐτοὺς ἐπιπλήττων στηλιτεύει, πάλιν δὲ τὸν Δαυϊτικὸν χρησμὸν ἄφυκτον ἐλέγχων ἀνατείνει· καὶ δι᾽ ἐκείνου τοὺς μὲν καταισχύνει, ἑαυτῷ δὲ τοὺς ὕμνους ἐπιθάλλειν διδάσκει.

Translation: “Since the hardening and stubbornness of heart of the Jews was being fanned into murmurings, He does not rebuke them from some other source, but again raises up the Davidic oracle as an irrefutable indictment; and through it He shames them, while teaching [the children] to offer praises to Himself.”

15. The Christ-Hating Nature of the Jews: Fabricating Every Slander

Greek (PG 101): τοιοῦτον τῶν Ἰουδαίων τὸ μισόχριστον, πάσας ὕβρεις καὶ διαβολὰς ἀναπλάττειν κατὰ τοῦ Σωτῆρος οὐ φρίττοντες· τῷ γὰρ φθόνῳ διὰ παντὸς καὶ τῇ βασκανίᾳ ἀνοιστρούμενοι, καὶ μεμηνότων οὐδὲν διαφέροντες.

Translation: “Such is the Christ-hating [nature] of the Jews — not shuddering to invent every insult and slander against the Savior. For driven throughout by envy and malice, they differ not at all from madmen.”

V. Jews as Prophet-Killers; Their Ancestral Pollution

16. Uncircumcised in Heart, Stiff-Necked, Murderers, Traitors, Children of Prophet-Killers

Greek (PG 101): ἀπεριτμήτους τῇ καρδίᾳ καὶ σκληροτραχήλους, φονεῖς τε καὶ προδότας, καὶ προγονικὸν τὸ μίασμα φέροντας, ἅτε δὴ προφητοκτόνων τέκνα, δεικνὺς ἅμα καὶ ἀποκαλῶν.

Translation: “…showing and declaring them to be uncircumcised in heart and stiff-necked, murderers and traitors, and bearing the ancestral pollution — as indeed children of prophet-killers.”

17. “You Are of Your Father the Devil” — The Jewish Nation Guilty

Greek (PG 101): ἵνα μὴ νῦν λέγω· «Ὑμεῖς ἐκ τοῦ πατρὸς τοῦ διαβόλου ἐστέ»· καί· «Γενεὰ πονηρὰ καὶ μοιχαλίς»· καὶ μυρία ἄλλα ὧν τὸ Ἰουδαίων ἔθνος ὑπεύθυνον.

Translation: “…not to mention now: ‘You are of your father the devil’; and: ‘An evil and adulterous generation’; and countless other charges of which the Jewish nation stands guilty.”

18. The Insolent, Murderous, and Faithless Jews; Unworthy of the Descent from Abraham

Greek (PG 102): Ὁ Σωτὴρ ἐν τοῖς Εὐαγγελίοις τὸ μεγαλαυχοῦν τῶν Ἰουδαίων καὶ μιαιφόνον καὶ ἄπιστον στηλιτεύων, καὶ ἀναξίους κρίνων γονῆς τῆς Ἀβραμιαίας, κἂν ἐκεῖθεν αὐτοῖς κατῄει τὸ φῦναι· «Εἰ τέκνα ἦτε, φησὶ, τοῦ Ἀβραάμ, ἐποιεῖτε ἂν τὰ ἔργα τοῦ Ἀβραάμ.»

Translation: “The Savior in the Gospels publicly brands the arrogance, the murderous character, and the faithlessness of the Jews, and judges them unworthy of descent from Abraham, even though their birth derived from him: ‘If you were children of Abraham,’ He says, ‘you would do the works of Abraham.'”

19. The Killing of Prophets as Prelude to the Final Destruction of the Jews

Greek (PG 102): Εἰ οὖν κατὰ τῶν προφητικῶν αἱμάτων ἡ τόλμα καὶ τῶν ἀπεσταλμένων ὁ φόνος εἰς ταλανισμὸν μὲν ἀπάγει τοὺς Ἰουδαίους, προοίμιον δὲ γίνεται τῆς ἐσχάτης αὐτῶν ἀπωλείας, πῶς οὐχὶ τὴν ἴσην δίκην, ἵνα μὴ λέγω τὴν μείζονα, οἱ θερμοὶ μὲν τῶν Ἰουδαίων μιμηταὶ καὶ ὑπερβαλέσθαι δὲ φιλονεικήσαντες αὐτοὺς, οὐκ αὐτοὶ καθ᾽ ἑαυτῶν ἐπάγουσί τε καὶ ἄφυκτον ταύτην κατασκευάζουσι περιφανῶς;

Translation: “If then the audacity against the blood of the prophets and the murder of those sent to them leads the Jews to wretchedness and becomes the prelude to their final destruction, how is it not the case that those who are ardent imitators of the Jews — and who strive to surpass them — are plainly bringing upon themselves an equal, not to say a greater, and inescapable punishment?”

VI. Jewish Ingratitude and Wickedness

20. The Ungrateful People of the Jews Condemning the Savior

Greek (PG 101): εὐεργεσίαν ὁ ἀχάριστος τῶν Ἰουδαίων δῆμος, τὴν περὶ τὸ σῶμα θεραπείαν ὅτι γέγονε Σαββάτῳ διασύροντας καὶ δυσφημοῦντας· οὕτως ὁ Δεσπότης ἐπιστομίζων.

Translation: “The ungrateful people of the Jews ridiculed and maligned the benefaction of bodily healing on the grounds that it had been done on the Sabbath; and thus the Master silenced them.”

21. No Word or Deed or Miracle Could Bring the Ungrateful Jews to Repentance

Greek (PG 104): τοὺς ἀγνώμονας καὶ ἀχαρίστους Ἰουδαίους ἦγεν εἰς συναίσθησιν, οὐ λόγος, οὐ πρᾶξις, οὐ θαυματουργήματα.

Translation:The ungrateful and thankless Jews were brought to repentance by neither word, nor deed, nor miracles.”

22. The Jews — Seeing the Savior’s Works — Were Inflamed with Envy and Plotted His Death

Greek (PG 102): τὰ ἐπίλοιπα, ἃ τὸ Ἰουδαίων ἔθνος δέον δοξάζειν καὶ ἀνυμνεῖν, εἰς φθόνον ἐξέκαυσεν· ἀφ᾽ οὗ τὸν κατὰ τοῦ Σωτῆρος ἐπ᾽ ὀλέθρῳ σφῶν φθόνον ἐπαλαμήσαντο.

Translation: “The remaining deeds — which the nation of the Jews ought to have glorified and hymned — set them ablaze with envy; and from this point they devised that envy against the Savior that was to be the instrument of their own destruction.”

VII. Supersessionism: The Synagogue Replaced by the Church

23. The Fullness of the Synagogue of the Jews Withers; the Children of the Church Come Forth

Greek (PG 102): τῆς Συναγωγῆς τῶν Ἰουδαίων χηρεύει τὸ πλήρωμα, καὶ τῶν τῆς Ἐκκλησίας κόλπων τὰ τέκνα προκύπτουσι, Χριστῷ τῷ νυμφίῳ θεοπρεπῶς αὐξανόμενά τε καὶ πληθυνόμενα.

Translation: “The fullness of the Synagogue of the Jews is made desolate and barren, and the children of the bosom of the Church emerge, growing and multiplying in a manner worthy of God toward Christ the Bridegroom.”

24. The Departing Generation Is the Jewish Race; the Coming Generation Is the Children of Grace

Greek (PG 101): εὑρεῖν δ᾽ ἔστιν ἐνίους γενεὰν μὲν ἐκπορευομένην καὶ ἐκβαλλομένην τὸ Ἰουδαίων γένος ἐκλαμβάνοντας, γενεὰν δὲ ἐρχομένην καὶ διαμένουσαν τὰ τέκνα τῆς χάριτος, ἅτε δὴ τοῦ θείου σπόρου καὶ τῆς κατὰ Χριστὸν γεωργίας ἀναβλαστήσαντα.

Translation: “It is possible to find some who understand the ‘departing generation that is cast out’ as the Jewish race, and the ‘coming generation that abides’ as the children of grace — those who have sprung up from the divine seed and the cultivation of Christ.”

VIII. The Diaspora as Divine Punishment

25. The Single Temple Foretold That the Scattered Jews Could Offer No Sacrifice

Greek (PG 101): ναὸς εἷς ἐπὶ ταῖς θυσίαις ἀφοριζόμενος τοῖς πανταχόσε γῆς διεσπαρμένοις Ἰουδαίοις τὴν θυσίαν ἄθυτον καὶ ἀκαλλιέρητον παντὶ τρόπῳ προεθέσπιζεν ἔσεσθαι· τοῦτο μὲν μὴ δυναμένων πανταχόθεν πάντων εἰς τὸν αὐτὸν νεὼν δι᾽ ἔτους συναθροίζεσθαι, τοῦτο δὲ καὶ τοῦ ναοῦ οὐ μετὰ πολὺν χρόνον πολεμίαις χερσὶν ἀνατρέπεσθαι μέλλοντος.

Translation: “The one Temple set apart for sacrifices was prophesying in every way that the sacrifice of the Jews scattered everywhere throughout the earth would be unperformed and unaccepted — both because it was impossible for all to gather from every place into the same Temple once a year, and because the Temple itself was going to be overthrown by hostile hands not long afterward.”

IX. Theological Enmity: The Jews as God-Fighters

26. The Jews Attribute the Signs of God to Beelzebub — Both Jew and Apostate Are God-Fighters

Greek (PG 102): Ἐπεὶ γὰρ οἱ τῶν Ἰουδαίων ἀγνώμονες τὸν Πλάστην ὁρῶντες ἀπελαύνοντα καὶ ψυχῶν καὶ σωμάτων τὰ πάθη, τὸν Βεελζεβοὺλ ταῖς θεοσηµείαις ἐπεφήμιζον… ὥσπερ οὖν ἑκάτερος ἁλίσκεται θεομαχῶν, καὶ ὁ Ἰουδαῖος καὶ ὁ ἀποστάτης, ὁ μὲν τὰς θεοσηµείας, ὁ δὲ τὰ δημιουργήματα τοῦ Θεοῦ διδοὺς τῷ ἐχθρῷ.

Translation: “For when the ungrateful of the Jews, seeing the Creator driving out the afflictions of both souls and bodies, attributed His divine signs to Beelzebub… thus each is caught fighting against God — both the Jew and the apostate: the one by ascribing the divine signs to the enemy, the other by ascribing the works of God to the enemy.”

27. The Jews Heard of God from Christ Yet Refused to Reverence Him

Translation: “The Apostle Peter, exhorting the Jews to repentance and proclaiming forgiveness of their murderous crime, says: ‘Let each one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins.'”

Greek (PG 103): Ὁ ιη’ πρὸς τοὺς λέγοντας ποίαν δώσουσιν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι δίκην, εἰ μὴ Θεὸν ἐσταύρωσαν; Ὁ ιθ’ πρὸς τοὺς λέγοντας Ἰουδαῖός ἐστιν ὁ μὴ Θεὸν ἐσταυρῶσθαι λέγων.

Translation: “The eighteenth [tractate]: against those who say, ‘What penalty will the Jews pay, if they did not crucify God?‘ The nineteenth: against those who say ‘He is a Jew who denies that God was crucified.‘”
