Petrus Galatinus (Pietro Colonna Galatino, O.F.M., c. 1460–c. 1540) was an Italian Franciscan friar, papal theologian under Leo X, and a distinguished Hebraist. His De Arcanis Catholicae Veritatis (“On the Secrets of the Catholic Truth”), first published at Ortona in 1516, is a twelve-book dialogue—between Galatinus, the humanist Johann Reuchlin (“Capnio”), and the Dominican inquisitor Jakob van Hochstraten (“Hogstratus”)—devoted to demonstrating the truth of the Catholic faith against the Jews, chiefly from the Jews‘ own Talmudic and Kabbalistic writings. It was reprinted at Frankfurt in 1672. The selections below are translated from both editions and are organized thematically. Only direct quotations are given.
I. The Jews as a Daily Example of Divine Punishment
