Book I, Vision 2: The Fall

Latin (PL 197:393):

Antiquo populo austeritatem legis Deus imposuit, cum Abrahæ circumcisionem indixit, quam postea in gratiam suavitatis convertit, cum Filium suum veritatem Evangelii credentibus dedit, in qua jugo legis sauciatos, oleo misericordiæ delinivit.

English:

God imposed the austerity of the law on the ancient people when He enjoined circumcision on Abraham, which He afterward converted into the grace of sweetness when He gave His Son, the truth of the Gospel, to believers, in which He soothed with the oil of mercy those wounded by the yoke of the law.


Book I, Vision 4: The Steward of the Synagogue

Latin (PL 197:405):

Villicus etiam iste Synagoga est, quæ nullam liberationem per sanguinem hircorum et vitulorum habere potuit; sed immolationem innocentis agni præfiguravit, per quem officio suo privari timuit, et intra se dicebat quod sufferre non posset duritiam legis quæ jussit: Si quis hoc vel illud fecerit, morte moriatur; et etiam erubescet quod foras projiceretur, ita ut in nulla petitione misericordiæ reficeretur.

English:

This steward is also the Synagogue, which could have no liberation through the blood of goats and calves; but prefigured the immolation of the innocent lamb, through which she feared to be deprived of her office, and said within herself that she could not endure the harshness of the law which commanded: If anyone does this or that, let him die the death; and she also blushed that she would be cast out, so that she would not be refreshed in any petition for mercy.

Book I, Vision 5: The Synagogue

English:

After this I saw what appeared to be a female figure from the head to the navel pale, and from the navel to the feet black, and in the feet bloody, but around her feet having a most white and pure cloud, and deprived of eyes, and she held her hands under her armpits, standing next to the altar which is before the eyes of God, but she did not touch it.

Et in corde ipsius stabat Abraham, et in pectore ejus Moses, in ventre vero reliqui prophetæ, singuli signa sua demonstrantes, et pulchritudinem novæ sponsæ admirantes.

English:

And in her heart stood Abraham, and in her breast Moses, and in her womb the other prophets, each showing their signs and admiring the beauty of the new bride.

English:

Moreover this one appeared of such magnitude like the immense tower of some city, having on her head something like a circle resembling the dawn.

English:

And bloody in the feet, but around her feet she has a most white and pure cloud, because in her consummation she killed the Prophet of Prophets, where she herself also fell and collapsed.

Yet in the same consummation, with the most clear and perspicacious faith arising in the minds of believers, because where the Synagogue received her end, the Church arose, when the apostolic doctrine after the death of the Son of God spread itself throughout the whole world.

English:

But also that image is deprived of eyes, holding her hands under her armpits, because the Synagogue did not look upon the true light, when she held the Only-Begotten of God in contempt.

English:

Wherefore also the works of justice she covers, not casting them away from herself in weariness of good work and torpor, and she veils them as if they negligently hide what they are not.

She stands next to the altar which is before the eyes of God, but does not touch it, because the law of God which she received by divine precept and divine inspection she knew in the husk indeed, but did not touch it interiorly, because she rather abhorred it than loved it, neglecting to offer to God the sacrifices and incense of devout prayers.

English:

But in her heart stands Abraham, because he himself was the beginning of circumcision in the Synagogue. And in her breast Moses, because he brought the divine law into the hearts of men, and in her womb the other prophets, that is, in that institution which had been divinely handed down to them, the inspectors of the divine precepts.

Each showing their own signs and admiring the beauty of the new bride, because they themselves showed the great things of their prophecy in marvelous signs, and beheld the splendor of the nobility of the Church with great admiration.

English:

Moreover she herself appears of such magnitude like the highest tower of some city, because receiving the magnitude of divine precepts, she proclaimed the fortification and defense of the noble and elect city, having on her head something like a circle resembling the dawn, because the Church in her rising showed the miracle of the Incarnation of the Only-Begotten of God, and displayed the clear virtues and mysteries which follow.

English:

For she herself was crowned as if at first morning, when she received the divine precepts, signifying Adam, who first received the command of God, but afterward fell into death in his transgression. So also the Jews did, who first received the divine law, but then rejected the Son of God in their unbelief.

Sed et sicut homo per mortem Unigeniti Dei circa novissimum tempus de perditione mortis ereptus est, ita et Synagoga ante novissimum diem per divinam clementiam excitata incredulitatem deseret, et ad cognitionem Dei veraciter perveniet.

English:

But also just as man was snatched from the perdition of death around the last time through the death of the Only-Begotten of God, so also the Synagogue before the last day, aroused by divine clemency, will desert her unbelief and will truly arrive at the knowledge of God.

Quid hoc? Nonne aurora ante solem ascendit? Sed aurora recedit et claritas solis permanet. Quid hoc? Vetus Testamentum recessit, et veritas Evangelii permanet.

English:

What is this? Does not the dawn rise before the sun? But the dawn recedes and the brightness of the sun remains. What is this? The Old Testament receded, and the truth of the Gospel remains.


Latin (PL 197:436):

Quia quæ antiqui in legalibus observationibus carnaliter observabant, hæc novus populus in Novo Testamento spiritualiter exercet, quoniam quod illi in carne ostenderunt, hoc isti in spiritu perficiunt.

English:

Because what the ancients observed carnally in legal observances, this the new people practice spiritually in the New Testament, since what those showed in the flesh, these perfect in the spirit.


Latin (PL 197:436):

Nam circumcisio non periit, quia in baptismum translata est, ut enim illi in uno membro signati sunt, sic et isti in omnibus membris suis. Unde antiqua præcepta non perierunt, quia in meliorem statum translata sunt.

English:

For circumcision did not perish, because it was transferred into baptism, for as those were marked in one member, so also these are in all their members. Wherefore the ancient precepts did not perish, because they were transferred into a better state.

Etiam in novissimo tempore Synagoga ad Ecclesiam se fideliter transferet. Nam, o Synagoga, cum in multis iniquitatibus errares ita quod cum Baal et cum ceteris his similibus te pollueres, consuetudinem legis turpissimis moribus scindens, et nuda in peccatis tuis jacens.

English:

Also in the last time the Synagogue will faithfully transfer herself to the Church. For, O Synagogue, when you erred in many iniquities so that you polluted yourself with Baal and with others similar to these, tearing the custom of the law with most shameful morals, and lying naked in your sins.

Ego Filius Altissimi in voluntate Patris mei extendi incarnationem meam, o Synagoga, super te, id est pro salute tua, auferens peccata tua, quæ in multis oblivionibus operata es, et firmavi tibi remedium salvationis, ita quod itinera foederis mei ad salutem tuam manifestavi, cum veram fidem per apostolicam doctrinam tibi aperui.

English:

I the Son of the Most High in the will of My Father extended My incarnation, O Synagogue, over you, that is for your salvation, taking away your sins which you worked in many forgetfulnesses, and I established for you the remedy of salvation, so that I manifested the paths of My covenant for your salvation, when I opened to you the true faith through apostolic doctrine.

Sed tu me justum deseruisti, et diabolo te conjunxisti.

English:

But you deserted Me the Just One, and joined yourself to the devil.


Latin (PL 197:436):

Sed tu, o homo, intellige: ut Samsonem uxor ipsius deseruit, ita quod lumine suo privatus est, sic et Synagoga Filium Dei deseruit, cum eum obdurata sprevit, et cum doctrinam illius abjecit.

English:

But you, O man, understand: just as Samson’s wife deserted him, so that he was deprived of his sight, so also the Synagogue deserted the Son of God, when hardened she spurned Him, and when she rejected His doctrine.

Sed postquam capilli ejus jam renati sunt, ita quod Ecclesia Dei confortata est, Filius Dei in fortitudine sua Synagogam dejecit, et natos illius exheredavit, cum etiam per gentiles Deum ignorantes zelo Dei contriti sunt.

English:

But after his hair was regenerated, so that the Church of God was strengthened, the Son of God in His strength cast down the Synagogue and disinherited her children, when also through Gentiles ignorant of God they were crushed by the zeal of God.

Ipsa enim multis erroribus totius confusionis et schismatis se subjecerat, et in prævaricationibus totius iniquitatis se polluerat.

English:

For she herself had subjected herself to many errors of all confusion and schism, and had polluted herself in the prevarications of all iniquity.

English:

But also just as David recalled his wife whom he had first espoused and who had polluted herself with another man, so also the Son of God will receive the Synagogue (which was first joined to Him in His incarnation, but deserting the grace of baptism followed the devil) finally around the last time, where she herself, deserting the errors of her infidelity, will return to the light of truth.

Nam diabolus Synagogam in cæcitate illius rapuit, et eam infidelitati in multis erroribus tradidit, nec hoc usque ad filium perditionis facere cessabit.

English:

For the devil seized the Synagogue in her blindness, and handed her over to infidelity in many errors, nor will he cease to do this until the son of perdition.

English:

When he [Antichrist] falls in the exaltation of his pride, just as Saul perished slain on Mount Gilboa, who had driven David from his land, and the son of iniquity will try to expel My Son in His elect, then My Son, with the Antichrist cast down, will recall the Synagogue to the true faith.

Quemadmodum et David primam uxorem suam post mortem Saulis recepit: cum enim in novissimo tempore homines illum per quem decepti fuerant victum viderint, ad viam salutis cum multa festinatione recurrent.

English:

Just as David received his first wife after the death of Saul: for when in the last time men will have seen him [Antichrist] by whom they were deceived conquered, they will run back to the way of salvation with great haste.

Non autem decuit ut veritas Evangelii umbram legis prænuntiaret, quoniam decet ut carnalia præcurrant et spiritualia subsequantur, quia etiam servus dominum suum venturum prædicit et non dominus servum in servitio præcurrit.

English:

But it was not fitting that the truth of the Gospel should foretell the shadow of the law, since it is fitting that carnal things precede and spiritual things follow, because also the servant foretells his lord’s coming and not the lord precedes the servant in service.

Ita et Synagoga in umbra significationis præcurrit, et Ecclesia in lumine veritatis subsecuta est.

English:

So also the Synagogue precedes in the shadow of signification, and the Church followed in the light of truth.


Book II, Vision 1: Abraham’s Circumcision and the Trinity

Latin (PL 197:455):

Tres alas ostendit quæ sanctam Trinitatem significat: ubi tu Synagoga me negabis et ubi alienus populus me suscipiet, ubi et tu, o Abraham, magnificaberis.

English:

It shows three wings which signify the Holy Trinity: where you, Synagogue, will deny Me and where a foreign people will receive Me, where also you, O Abraham, will be magnified.


Latin (PL 197:455):

O Abraham, tu es circumdatus circumcisione, tu es ut muro septus Veteri Testamento, tu es ornatus aurora solis Ecclesiæ.

English:

O Abraham, you are surrounded by circumcision, you are enclosed as by a wall by the Old Testament, you are adorned with the dawn of the sun of the Church.


Latin (PL 197:455):

Ego tibi et generi tuo dedi circumcisionem usque ad Filium meum, qui aperte peccata hominum remisit, et ubi carnalis circumcisio veteris præputii cecidit: eum fons baptismi in sanctificatione lavacri filii mei veraciter ebullivit.

English:

I gave to you and to your race circumcision up to My Son, who openly forgave the sins of men, and where the carnal circumcision of the old foreskin fell: then the font of baptism in the sanctification of the washing of My Son truly bubbled up.


Book II, Vision 3: Judas and the Hardness of Unbelief

Latin (PL 197:472):

Propter duritiam infidelitatis caro unius [Judæ] spiritum suffocavit.

English:

On account of the hardness of unbelief, the flesh of one [Judas] suffocated the spirit.


Latin (PL 197:472):

A filiis autem et amicis ejus libertas illorum, qui sibi resistebant, evanuit; a filiis quippe Israel ejecti sunt, qui liberi exstiterunt.

English:

But from his sons and friends the liberty of those who resisted him vanished; for from the sons of Israel those who had been free were cast out.


Book II, Vision 5: The Devil and the Jews

Latin (PL 197:531):

Sed antiquus serpens Judæis ac infidelibus hominibus persuasit ut oculos suos clauderent, ne me viderent.

English:

But the ancient serpent persuaded the Jews and unbelieving men to close their eyes, lest they should see Me.

English:

And as the Jews had done, one thing after another.


Book II, Vision 6: Those Worse Than the Jews

Latin (PL 197:573):

English:

Cast away from you those who are worse than the Jews, and like Cain, who killed his own brother.


Book III, Vision 2: Samson and the Synagogue

English:

To the Son of God, namely the most strong Samson, the Synagogue was first joined; to whom He Himself distributed those hidden things which were concealed in the Old Testament, in His marvelous doctrine, kindly opening to her the interior sweetness of the law which was stronger than a lion.

Sed ipsa decepit eum; faciens ut secreta ejus illuderentur, in doctrinam illius respicere nolens, sed eam magno fastu superbiæ despiciens.

English:

But she herself deceived Him; causing His secrets to be mocked, not willing to look upon His doctrine, but despising it with great pride and arrogance.

English:

Wherefore He Himself, moved, predicted that the kingdom of God would be taken away from her and given to another nation.

But the father of that spouse, namely diabolical seduction, joined her to another man, that is to infidelity.

Then the Son of God sent forth cunning foxes, namely the apostles, who burned the crops of His enemies with the fire of the Holy Spirit, that is, who turned the legal precepts to spiritual understanding, thus the Synagogue was burned with her father, namely overthrown by the perverse unbelief of the Synagogue.

Then He slew the unbelievers with great signs and stupendous miracles; so that all trembled with great astonishment, when they said they feared the Romans would come and take away both their place and nation.

Letter to the Prelates of Mainz Regarding Jewish Converts

English:

In the true Israel, which is in the Church of God, and who are the sons of Abraham according to faith, and who are circumcised in their hearts, and who do not despise the word of God, but fulfill it in the works of truth.

English:

For just as the sons of Israel afflicted Moses, so also these who have the spirit oppress the spirit by their carnality.

On Those Who Reject God Like the Israelites

English:

Just as the sons of Israel in the desert stirred up many disturbances against God and against Moses.

English:

Wherefore God destroyed the sons of Israel on account of the idolatry which they practiced, when they said Baal was God.

You sanctified the Israelite people in the waters, whom You had chosen in Abraham through circumcision.


Comparison to the Children of Israel

Quemadmodum filii Israel fecerunt, qui post afflictiones suas dura corda in tristitiam vertent.

English:

Just as the sons of Israel did, who after their afflictions turned their hard hearts into sadness.
